There is a festival of architecture in Scotland now, sponsored by the Fife Contemporary Arts Center. It’s called “Shelters,” and features an entire room exhibiting our work, with photo and page blowups, and our building books on tables (above). It’s open now at the Kircaldy Galleries (Kircaldy is about 12 miles north of Edinburgh, on the east coast of Scotland) and runs through June 5, 2016.
I’ll be doing a slide show presentation on May 10th, at Kircaldy Galleries, titled “50 Years of Natural Building,” chronicling our building books from Shelter in 1973 up to the present.

A young family is making a last-ditch effort to save its cherished “hobbit house” from the bulldozers after planners deemed it had to be razed.
Charlie Hague and Megan Williams used natural materials to lovingly build their roundhouse tucked away in southwest Wales. But the pair, both 27, applied for planning permission only after moving in with their newborn son, Eli, in 2012.
Though many local people did not even know the small building was there, planners ruled the house did not fit in with the surrounding Pembrokeshire countryside and decided it had to go.
I did 3 posts on Jonny Briggs’ timber framing on my blog here: www.lloydkahn.com/?s=briggs
Jonny is a 26-year-old carpenter from North Yorkshire who learned his craft at the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community (that’s Prince of Wales — traditional carpentry is just one of Charlie’s many earth-sensitive endeavors).
“…The building craft apprenticeship allows students who have a genuine interest in traditional building, sustainability and design to learn from master craftspeople around the UK.
Jonny now specializes in the design and build of traditional timber frames, structural timber work and bespoke furniture.”
Jonny wrote us today:
Hi Lloyd,
I have finally got a website together which shows the larger structures I have built over the last few years. It’s www.jonny-briggs.com
Thanks,
Jonny
I tell ya, the 20-year-olds these days are really something! A whole new octave.

Hi,
I have just completed a structure that has greatly been inspired by the books you produce. I am a 26-year-old carpenter/designer from the UK and work using traditional techniques and local sustainable materials.
I just thought I would share my creation with you, the Peach House was commissioned by a member of the Royal family and I was given free rein with the design and build, which was a very rare but amazing experience. Read More …
Hi Lloyd,
I am 17 years old and currently living in the UK. I have just filmed and produced my first ever short film. It is about my dad (Scott Evans) who you featured in your last book, Tiny Homes.
Hope you enjoy it and good luck with the new book.
